Daniel McGrew is an active performer of a broad range of repertoires spanning opera, musical theatre, early, and new music. “An irresistible force of the recital stage” (San Francisco Classical Voice), he is deeply committed to the art of song; in addition to presenting solo programs across the country, McGrew appears regularly with such presenters as New York Festival of Song, Brooklyn Art Song Society, Mirror Visions Ensemble, and Cincinnati Song Initiative. Recent recital highlights include debut recitals at the Kennedy and Lincoln Centers; the complete Mörike-lieder of Hugo Wolf with pianist, Martin Katz; Schumann’s Liederkreis Op. 24 with the Seán Curran Dance Company; a program of music for voice and harp with harpist, Parker Ramsay; and myriad premieres of new songs and cycles by composers including Shawn Chang, Tom Cipullo, John Harbison, Matthew Ricketts, and Nina Shekhar.
A winner of the 2021 Young Concert Artist Competition, McGrew is an active chamber musician and concert soloist. In recent seasons he has been heard in Handel's Messiah with the Richmond Symphony, Mendelssohn’s Lobgesang with ProMusica Columbus, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 with the Missouri Symphony, Bach’s St. John Passion with Bach Collegium Fort Wayne, and Britten’s Nocturne with Mendelssohn-Orchesterakademie and the Gewandhaus Orchester of Leipzig. He has been in residence at the Marlboro, YellowBarn, and Tanglewood music festivals.
An early music specialist, Daniel has performed Bach with conductors including Matthew Halls, John Harbison, David Hill, Koji Otsuki, and Masaaki Suzuki. He appears regularly with Philadelphia Chamber Music Society’s Gamut Bach Ensemble and Bach Collegium Fort Wayne.
Celebrated for “complex, beautifully sung and articulated portraits” (Opera News), McGrew’s recent operatic roles include the Auctioneer in Rihannon Giddens’s Pulitzer Prize winning Omar, Mozart in Rimsky-Korsokov’s Mozart and Salieri, and Mortimer in the American Premiere of George Benjamin’s Lessons in Love and Violence under the composer’s baton. Beyond the classical repertory, he performed in the symphonic premiere of James Lapine’s Sondheim on Sondheim with the Boston Pops Orchestra and David Loud’s Sondheim revue, A Good Thing Going.
McGrew is also a devoted vocal pedagogue, and teaches privately in Connecticut and New York. He holds degrees from Oberlin, Yale, and University of Michigan. He is represented by Young Concert Artists and can be found on instagram @mcgrowing or at danielmcgrewtenor.com.
